Reader question:
What is SR22 insurance?
Boris
Excellent question, Boris.
SR22 what is also called DUI insurance, is no necessarily an insurance policy in and of itself, but is more a form that needs to accompany your auto insurance policy. The SR22 may be required of you for many reasons, one being, obviously, that you have been charged with a DUI/DWI, another being that you have been caught driving without insurance. These aren’t the only reasons that you may have to file the SR22 form along with your car insurance policy.
What is SR22 though, really? It is a form which is mandated by the DMV in most states, with the exception of less than a handful, and its purpose is to prove to the state that you have insurance so that you can reinstate your driver’s license after having had it suspended. In most cases, in order to keep your driver’s license, you have to keep the SR22 form on file, and if you don’t pay your car insurance premium, your SR22 expires and your license is suspended once more.
