Limited Use Vehicle Auto Insurance Policies and Coverage
Reader’s Question:
I have two cars – one is new and the other is an old car. I have auto insurance policy on the new car. My question is, do I need to maintain auto insurance policy on the old car? If let’s say I am driving my old car, will my car insurance policy extend its coverage on the old car? I am really confused. Please help.
Irvin
Independence, MO
Don’t be confused. It’s very simple. If you have two cars then you need to maintain auto insurance policy on both cars, regardless if it’s the new or old car. Your auto insurance policy on the new car will not be extended on your old car. And also, Missouri state law requires all vehicles driven on its road to have auto insurance policy.
If you are thinking on how you can avoid on paying too much premium, then I would suggest you do this. I also have two cars, wherein I have liability coverage on the old car and have full coverage on the new car. And since I am getting said policies for all my cars from the same auto insurance company, I am getting a discount for having a multiple car policy.

Will My Auto Insurance Cover a Broken Window In My Car
Reader’s Question:
Will my auto insurance cover a broken side glass window in my car?
Mary
New Haven, CT
Your side glass window should be covered if you have comprehensive car insurance on your car insurance policy.
Unless you decided to have a zero deductible for glass breakage on your automobile than the normal Comprehensive deductible amount would be due in order to have for your side glass window fixed or replaced.
If you have a high deductible amount with your Comprehensive coverage you may want to obtain an estimate to check the cost to repair the side window on your automobile first to check if it is worth placing a car insurance claim through your car insurance or if it would be better to pay out of pocket for the glass repair/replacement cost.
Young Driver Auto Insurance Rates in Wisconsin
Reader’s Question:
I will be adding my teenage daughter under my car insurance policy soon. It’s my first time to add a teen driver under my coverage. I know it will increase my rate as what I heard from my friends. What are the things that will likely affect car insurance rates?
Betty
Racine, WI
Adding a teenage driver will surely increase your premium. When my friend here in Racine, Wisconsin added her teenage son under her coverage, the increase on her insurance was from some hundred dollars to several thousand dollars a year. However, my friend also told me that there are still a lot of ways to keep your premium lower:
Driving record. To insure keeping your premium affordable, make sure your daughter maintains spotless driving history. But if she failed to, consider getting another insurance company for her that handles high risk drivers;
Gender. According to studies, female teen drivers have lesser accidents as compared to males, so they are less expensive to be insured;
Grades. If your daughter maintains B or better average, then you can get 10-25% discount. The assumption is simple, if you teen is getting good grades that means she spends most of her time studying in your house rather than joyriding;
Vehicle. The more expensive a car is, the higher your premium will be;
Operator Status. If you have multiple cars and your car insurance company offers you the option to assign your daughter as the principal operator of a particular car, assign her to the least expensive car to be insured;
Insurance Policy. If your daughter is going to drive a used or old car, it’s impractical to get comprehensive and collision policy, drop those policies and just get liability policy.
It’s also important that you set driving restrictions to your daughter and demand that she pays part of her insurance. That way, you’re imparting the value of being obedient and responsible. Also, don’t forget to shop around online to get the best quote in Wisconsin.
Who Is Responsible For an Accident in a Rental Car
Reader’s Question:
If the rental company in California, is the registered owner of a car and that car is rented out and got involved in crash, who is responsible for the damages?
carl
Fairfield, CA
Generally, when renting a vehicle from a rental company in California, the individual usually signs a form stating that the renter will be held liable for damages caused to the car. It include damages to other automobiles caused by the renter and if they were at-fault in the accident.
According to the CA Department of Insurance when renting a car, the car rental companies hold the renter liable under the rental agreement for damage to their car. It is also noted that the rental agency will offer a Damage Waiver for an additional cost.
So if a waiver is not bought, review your own car insurance policy to find out if any extension of coverage will be applied. In addition, know how the liability coverage afforded by your car insurance policy applies in case you are found at fault in an accident with the rented vehicle.
You may not need to purchase auto insurance from the rental vehicle if your own personal auto insurance coverages will cover the rental vehicle.
How Much Will Auto Insurance Increase With Teen Driver Added
Reader’s Question:
I know I should call my Insurance Company about this but will my car insurance premium go higher If I allow my teenage daughter to drive the car?
Jonas
Inglewood, CA
Yes, do expect your car insurance premiums to go higher for having a teenage driver using the family car. You may be tempted to get car insurance for your daughter on her own but this will actually amount to higher costs on car insurance coverage for your family. The reason for this is that teenagers are considered by most car insurance policies as generally high-risk or liability drivers due to lack of experience, being more temperamental or reckless and not having the same level of judgment as an adult, hence, having a bigger potential to costs more to cover for your car insurance company there in Inglewood, California.
Don’t despair though as there are a number of ways, as listed below, where you can save or control how much you pay for car insurance coverage.
Good Student Car Insurance Discounts
Most car insurance providers in most states do have provisions or incentives for driving students with good academic performance. Your teenager will need at least an average of B to qualify for a good student discount but this helps in maintaining the cost of protection for your loved ones on the road.
Increase your deductibles
This is another way of lowering down the monthly costs of maintaining sufficient car insurance for your family. Deductibles by the way are the costs taken away from the whole coverage amount once you file a claim with your insurance company. The higher the deductible you agree on, the lower you have to pay for monthly premiums.
Learn how to drive defensively
If you have taken defensive driving lessons then you can present this to your insurance provider as this shows you have more skills and knowledge to avoid car accidents therefore qualifying you for a lower insurance premium. IT is advisable for everyone in your family who will be driving the insured vehicle to take this lessons as well.
Does Comprehensive Auto Insurance Cover Engine Damage
Reader’s Question:
While driving to school, my teen daughter found that there is a smoke coming from the back of her car. Her car engine had seized up. She’s under my car insurance policy. Is this covered by my comprehensive car insurance coverage in Anderson, Indiana?
Rebecca
Anderson, IN
Indiana State Law defines comprehensive auto insurance policy as one that covers damages to your vehicle in an event of non-related car accidents happened. There are several reasons that are considered non-accident related like damages resulting from fire, theft, and glass breakage.
Going back to your question, it does not seem though that car engine seizing is listed as one of the reasons that would be covered by your car comprehensive policy. Smoke coming out from you car’s daughter appeared to me as a car engine trouble. For this, I would suggest getting a mechanical breakdown insurance or MBI. This kind of policy is designed to protect policyholders from costly repair bills. Oftentimes, a deductible is involved with this however, once you paid the deductible then MBI would cover car repairs involving all mechanical parts of your vehicle excluding wear and tear and maintenance.
Contact your car insurance agent in Indiana to get more information about adding mechanical breakdown insurance on your auto insurance policy. You can also start shopping around through websites to compare car insurance rates.
