Reader’s Question:

I live in Redford, Michigan and I am just curious as to how many insurance points can you get to be considered as bad or unsafe driver?

Ben

Redford, MI

The Michigan state has a point system wherein each moving violation has a point value, that is set by the Michigan Vehicle Code. These points are evaluated and put on your driving history after you have been found guilty for a civil violation. These points will stay on your driving record for two years.

The number of points that takes for an insurance carrier to consider you an unsafe driver will depend on insurance carrier since insurers differ on how they use these violations to calculate your car insurance rates or if you are a high risk driver. To know more about your insurance carrier’s rating system you may contact them or your state’s insurance regulator.

Keep in mind that the state of Michigan has a law that if you accumulate seven or more points on your driving history or are convicted of traffic violations you will have to participate in the Driver Responsibility Program. So it is essential to avoid getting points or keep points low in Redford, Michigan not only for car insurance purposes but also to avoid paying for this fee which could range from $100 up to $1000.
