Reader’s Question:
If I have a traffic violation here in Fort Collins, Colorado, how long will it stay on my driving record? I had one before for driving an unsafe vehicle. That was on 1998, if I remember it correctly. So, I’m wondering will it still reflect on my driving record? And how can I get a copy of my driving record?

Fort Collins, CO
In accordance with State and Federal Law, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) keep the driving records for a period of seven (7) years. Said records are to cover the 7-year period and do not provide record for less than 7 years.
To answer your first question, since it happened in 1998, then it will not reflect on your driving record. And for your second question, there are two ways to get hold of your driving record:
First, through a driver’s license office where you can get a regular copy which means non-certified copy of the record and;
Second, request through writing addressed to the Colorado Department of Revenue.
The only license office that provides a certified copy of your driving record is the Driver Services at 1881 Pierce, Lakewood. The fees are: $2.20 for non-certified driving record and $2.70 for a certified copy of a driving record.
In your request, you need to include personal information like complete name, birth date, and driver’s license (if it’s available). The Colorado Department of Revenue accepts payment in the form of check or money order payable to them. Processing time is between 10 to 14 days from the time your request is received.
For additional information you can contact Colorado DMV.
