Reader’s Question:

I will be buying my first car soon. And I’m doing a lot of shopping for my auto insurance. I’ve got one big question in my mind now. How much bodily injury coverage do I really need in Nebraska? What are the things that I need to consider in setting the limits for that coverage?

Tammy

Omaha, NE

Hi Tammy!

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I know it’s quite confusing when it comes to buying auto insurance for the first time. But you don’t have to worry, help is here.

Let me first define what bodily injury coverage is. If you get involved in an accident, this kind of auto insurance coverage backs you up in the way that it provides coverage for bodily injuries suffered by the other party involved. In addition, this may also give you support for legal assistance that you may need if the other party decided to sue you.

First thing you need to consider in setting your liability limits is what does the state of Nebraska require? The required minimum liability limits in your state is 25/50/25. This means minimum limits of $25,000 for one person/ accident; $50,000 for all injuries/accident; and $25,000 to cover damages to property.

Now that you are aware of the minimum requirements, you know that you cannot go below those limits. The next question is how much do you have to pay? Only you can answer that. But let me give you some tips that you need to consider. If you chose to have limits that are low, remember that you may be putting your own self (or your loved ones under your policy) in a financial risk. If you get involved in an accident and the damage are way beyond your limits, you have no choice but to pay for the damages from your own pockets. If you do not have enough savings, then you may find yourself in a situation of liquidating your properties just to make ends meet.

I hope I was able to give you some insights. Also, don’t forget to seek the help of your car insurance agent in Nebraska. And do drive safely all the time.

What Are Car Insurance Requirements in Wisconsin

Reader’s Question:

I have no time to review my car insurance policies. I just purchased what is required by Wisconsin state law and paid for it. I have bodily injury policy on my auto insurance since it is required by law here. My question is, does this mean I am covered if I am involved in a car accident. Does that mean I don’t have to worry for myself? I am from Wisconsin by the way.

Fernanda

Eau Claire, WI

I think there’s some confusion on your part. Bodily injury policy does not protect yourself or your vehicle itself. Let’s take this scenario for an example. If you are involved in a vehicular accident and let’s say you are at-fault, then most probably the other party will file its claim and your insurance policy will pay them. That is where the bodily injury policy kicks in. It serves as a protection on your part by paying for the injured party depending on the limits you have on your car insurance policy.

For more information about auto insurance policy in Wisconsin, you can ask your car insurance agent or even the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI).

Is Car Insurance Required in Nebraska

Reader’s Question:

I will be buying a car in Lincoln Nebraska next week. Do you think I’d be required to get auto insurance?

Julian

Lincoln Nebraska NE

You can take this to the bank, Julian: definitely! If you are planning to use that car on the road and therefore you will have to register it with the Department of Motor Vehicles in Nebraska, then you’d have to get auto insurance. This is required in most states and all residents have to abide to this rule, and that includes you, Julian. I haven’t really heard of conditions that might exempt someone from registering and insuring their vehicles. Also, if you will be purchasing that car through an auto loan, your bank (or your lender) will require you to have auto insurance, too. There is really no way (we’re talking legal ways here, okay) to get around it. You still have some days left for you to prepare for this.

And shopping online can be the best preparation you can undertake. You can do this at work, at home or even when you are in the gym. At the top of this page you will see a space where you can type in your zip code. At the end of the short quiz you will get free quotes from several insurance companies in Nebraska . True, you will have to answer a couple of questions, but just think of how much time and effort you are saving by doing this online. Visiting with your insurer is reduced tremendously by doing this online.

Reader’s Question:

I heard from my aunt that there are mandatory and optional car insurance policies in Massachusetts. What is a mandatory auto insurance policy? And what is the optional car insurance coverage? I am from Massachusetts.

Bettina

Framingham, MA

Massachusetts is a no-fault state. This means that if a person is involved in a car accident, regardless of whose fault it is, that person’s auto insurance company will automatically cover the damages depending on the limits on the policy.

The Massachusetts State has a mandatory auto insurance polices as follows:

1. for bodily injury to the other party: $20,000 for every person; $40,000 for every accident;
2. for bodily injury caused by a party that is not insured: $20,000 for every person; $40,000 for every accident;
3. for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage that has a minimum required limit of $8,000; and
4. for damage to property with a required limit of $5,000

Those above mentioned polices are mandatory. According to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance the optional policies would include: increased limits both for bodily injury to the other party and bodily injured caused by an uninsured party; medical expenses coverage; collision policy; comprehensive coverage; substitute car’s coverage if your main vehicle is being repaired; and coverage for labor and towing in an event that your car broke down.

For more questions and information about auto insurance law in Massachusetts you can ask the MA Department of Insurance or even your car insurance agent.
