Reader’s Question:

I was driving in Texas last week and was given a ticket for speed driving. I am thinking of just ignoring it. I am from Kent, Washington. If I ignore this citation what will happen to me? Is it ok to just pretend that it didn’t happen?

I would say that ignoring a citation is not a good idea at all.

Both the states of Texas and Washington are part of Drivers License Compact and Non-Resident Violator Compact. With the DLC agreement any moving violations that happened between the two states will be reported to the violator’s home state. In your case, your traffic violation in Texas will be reported in your home state.

If you did not pay your citation, Texas will require your home state to suspend your driver’s license, because that is what the Non-Resident Violator Compact is about. It requires its member states to suspend the driving privileges of the traffic violator in another state.

Always remember that a suspended license under your driving record is an eye sore. You’re up to higher insurance rates with that kind of driving record. You may want to check with DMV for more information for this citation.
