When buying an insurance policy in Erie, Pennsylvania or anywhere in the United States, you are expected to have an existing driver’s license issued by one of the states within the US. Or, if you don’t have a driver’s license yet, you need to obtain one in order to be insured in America.

Most insurance companies require you to obtain a driver’s license in the state you reside even before purchasing insurance or within 30 days after obtaining coverage. This is also a requirement of some carriers to insure you in the United States with an international license.

I don’t know of any specific specialty carriers for international drivers but if you’re going to reside in one state for a certain length of time then you can contact that state’s Department of Motor Vehicles to see if it is possible for you to receive a driver’s license.

If you’re unable to obtain a US driver’s license and need information on a specialty insurer that may cover you, contact the state’s insurance regulatory body to see if they can advise you on companies that are licensed in that particular state that would be able to cover your auto insurance needs with your foreign driver’s license.
