Reader’s Question:
I am quite confused with auto insurance law in California. I know that you need to have some sort of financial responsibility to drive around California. But my question is, what if my cousin whose from Florida is planning to visit me. Is it prohibited by law if I let him drive my car? I have auto insurance on the vehicle that he’s gonna borrow but my cousin doesn’t have auto insurance policy in Burbank, California.

The California State Law requires that all vehicles being driven and used on the streets of California be covered by financial responsibility. This financial responsibility should cover all the vehicles regardless if it is being operated or parked in California. One of the ways (but is not limited to) in meeting such financial responsibility requirement is by purchasing auto insurance policy.
So, given this information, it appears that financial responsibility applies to the vehicle itself but not to the one driving. So, your cousin can use your car without being cited for a traffic violation.
However, you need to ask your car insurance agent in Burbank, California to know if your cousin will be covered by your auto insurance policy in an event that an accident happened while he is driving your car, In general, allowing a person to use your car means they are also covered by your car insurance policy. But, this guideline differs from each and every car insurance company.
