Reader’s Question:
My cousin is driving around Lakewood, Washington and was stopped by a policeman. He was asked to show his insurance card and luckily he had his card with him. My question is, why do we have to show a proof of insurance when stopped by a policeman? If I failed to do that, what would happen?

It’s a must that every driver shows his proof of insurance whenever he or she is stopped by a policeman. And the reason for that is to prove that you or the car you are driving has insurance. As you see Tommy, Washington has a mandatory car insurance law. Being caught driving without your insurance card is considered a traffic violation. You will be fined $450 plus there’s a possibility that it will be added on your driving history. Also, the state court could even ask you to pay for additional fees like public safety assessment which takes about 70% of the total fines.
The best advice I would always give to all the drivers out there is never drive without making sure that you have your auto insurance card with you. It’s always best to be prepared at all times.
