Reader’s Question:

Can I still rent a car even if I’m under 25? What are the things I need to know? Would it help if I’m under my parent’s car insurance policy here in Hillsboro,Oregon?

Janine

Hillsboro, OR

It is possible for people under the age of 25 to rent a vehicle. What you do need to realize though is that car rental companies are very hesitant in allowing under 25 year old drivers to avail of their services and if you are allowed a car rental agreement often this would mean some additional charges and restrictions. Being under your parents car insurance policy might help you get to be able to rent a car provided that the said car insurance policy extends coverage to you, normally as a named driver, and that it allows car insurance coverage to vehicles other than the one listed under the said policy. You should also check to make sure that you get enough comprehensive, collision damage, and liability insurance coverage that will extend to the rental vehicle you will be using.

You may also get additional help and car insurance protection if you use a credit card that offers car accident insurance. Try to find a car rental provider in Hillsboro, Oregon that will agree to give good student discounts as well if you are performing well, academically. You can talk to your parents auto insurance agent to see if they could provide you a list of car rental services that allows under-twenty fives to rent a vehicle. They may even be kind enough to help you facilitate the whole rental process to your advantage.

Reader’s Question:

I’m on active military duty and would be out of the country for six months, can I ask my car insurance provider here in Columbia, South Carolina, to suspend my car insurance or get a discount?

Mason

Columbia, SC

Yes, it is definitely possible for your car insurance provider to either suspend your car insurance bills or provide you a discount when you put your car in storage while serving active military duty abroad. Some insurance provider may also place your car insurance policy in some form of Military Storage Protection Plan where they will be taking your car to a pre-designated safe-storage location until your return. GEICO, one of the most popular car insurance providers (and is know for its military-friendly insurance policies) has such a plan as stated above where if you will require car storage for 30 or more days they will store the vehicle for you and provide discounts towards your car insurance premiums.

If you will be sent out of the country for an extended period of time, you have to make sure that it is clear between you and your auto insurance provider there in Columbia, South Carolina, what will happen to your insured vehicle in the event you get prolonged or delayed in returning. Will the storage protection plan extended to cover the periods that you have not claimed your vehicle yet from safekeeping? Will you lose your discounts or pay any extra fees or penalties for going beyond the minimum or agreed upon storage period? These are very important questions to ask your car insurance provider before agreeing to put your vehicle in storage.

Reader’s Question:

I’ve never found renting a car enjoyable in the past but I would need to rent a car here in Springfield, Massachusetts for an upcoming business trip. My question, I guess, is if my car insurance company would still cover me even if I’m driving a rental car?

Tyla

Springfield, MA

Your auto insurance provider may still be able to provide adequate coverage for you when you rent a vehicle. In most cases, your comprehensive and collision coverages on your vehicle can also be applied towards your car rental agreement. It is best you speak to you auto insurance company and determine if your policy would include car rental services and up to what extent or limitations can they cover you for in the event you do get involved in a vehicular accident while using the rental car. You would also want to determine if your comprehensive insurance coverage would pay for loss of your belongings or the theft of the rented vehicle itself.

The car rental service there in Springfield, Massachusetts would also offer you additional coverage in the form of a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) form. This would be a good idea if your car insurance has very limited or no coverage at all when your driving a rented car. An LDW would basically exempt you from financial obligations in case the rented vehicle is damaged or stolen. This could also avoid you having to be charged the daily car rental rate (known as “loss of use”) if the car cannot be used because it needs repair. If you will be using a credit card to rent the vehicle you may also want to call up your credit card company since most credit cards also provide some form of coverage when you use it to rent a vehicle. You want to know what you have so that you can make sure that you are not paying for any duplicate coverage while still maintaining adequate protection.

Reader’s Question:

We have a new auto insurance provider here in New York, New York. Should I still purchase a Supplemental Spousal Liability Insurance? I thought adding my wife’s name on our car insurance policy should already be enough?

Sef

New York, NY

You might find it strange to hear that your car insurance coverage might not actually cover your spouse under their policy in the event of a car accident. This would happen if the party involved in a car accident caused due to driver’s negligence. Your spouse, who might have been injured, hospitalized, or died, might not be given the same benefit coming from the coverages of your auto insurance as those covered under your policy in New York, New York especially if you have no No-Fault Liability coverage.

What you would want to do is to get in touch with your car insurance agent to see if you already have Supplemental Spousal Liability Insurance under your existing policy. Most Auto insurance providers are required to notify and offer their car insurance policyholders the chance to purchase this additional type of coverage. This usually happens when you initially sign up for car insurance or during the renewal of your policy. Make you you do understand exactly how your spouse will protected and for how much.

Try to also shop around and get an idea if other car insurance providers in your area are providing car insurance that already includes Supplemental Spousal Liability Insurance under the policy. You may save more money doing this than having to add the said policy as an additional.

Reader’s Question:

I’m told I still need to purchase a “Collision damage Waiver” since I will be renting a car here in Brookhaven, New York, for about a month or so. What if I already have car Insurance?

Dennis

Brookhaven, NY

Collision Damage Waiver (Also known as Optional Vehicle Protection) is a policy that is sold by a car rental company to their customers who do not have personal auto insurance coverage. Although the agreements you get from each car company may be different, they are required by the state of New York, under its Financial Responsibility laws, to provide sufficient auto insurance coverage towards their vehicles whenever it is rented.

Since you will be renting a car there in Brookhaven for about a month and you already have a personal car insurance policy under your name then you are no longer required to purchase this policy in order to rent a car. You do want to make sure though that your auto insurance policy does have enough comprehensive and collision coverage to pay for any loss or damages to the rented vehicle in case of an accident, which can otherwise be charged to you directly by the car rental service. The price of a Collision Damage Waiver policy usually falls around $12 a day but still depends on the actual cash value of the vehicle being rented.

You may also be interested to know that a lot of credit card companies already provide cardholders with some level of auto coverage if they use the credit card to rent vehicles. This means that you may get additional protection towards your rented vehicle aside from your current car insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

My wife was recently recruited by the US Army here in Sioux City, Iowa, and is now serving abroad. We were wondering what kind of discounts can we get for car insurance if we put our policy under her name. Any info is appreciated, Thanks!

Julius

Sioux City, IA

One of the many benefits of joining the military is that you get discounts or get deposits waived to almost any bill you may have under your name. Car insurance is no exception to this. The majority of car insurance companies out there that provides discounts towards military servicemen and servicewomen. Think of it as their way of showing patriotism (and the fact that most military personnel make for very reliable customers).

One notable, military-friendly car insurance provider is GEICO, where Active duty and Retired military personnel, as well as Reserves and individuals serving under the National Guard can get up to a fifteen-percent (15%) discount towards their total auto insurance premiums. Soldiers who have been deployed to countries or areas considered by the Department of Defense as Imminent-danger-pay-areas (e.g: Iraq or Serbia) can expect even more savings and discounts passed towards their auto insurance bills.

It is best to consult your car insurance agent there in Sioux City, Iowa, about offers and benefits of getting your car insurance under your wife’s name. It will also be a good idea to do some research and compare different auto insurance providers if you feel you’re not getting much savings at all. You may be able to get better rates or better discounts with a competitor, or haggle with your current car insurance provider to keep you and your wife as a customer.

Rental Car Insurance Fort Lauderdale Florida FL

Reader’s Question:

My teenagers are coming over to visit me here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and would be bringing some friends with them. They want to rent a car to go around but they are under 25 so I’m wondering if my kids will be allowed to rent a car if they are under my car insurance policy?

Susan
Fort Lauderdale, FL

Most large car rental companies are either very hesitant to (or downright refuses to) allow anyone under 25 to rent vehicles. The fact is these companies are trying to avoid, as much as possible, risks and losses in their end of the business. Said risk mostly arising from underage/ teenage driving.

There is still a possibility that your teenagers could be allowed to rent a vehicle there in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, provided that you are able to find a car rental company that provides this option. Your teenagers should also be listed as a named driver under your car insurance policy, and that said policy has collision and liability coverage that will extend to your teenagers and it allows them to get into a rental agreement without requiring your name to be on it as well. So it is very important that you talk to your car insurance agent as well about provisions in your car insurance policy, as well as any limitations that might come with it for you and your teenagers. Sunshine Rent A Car is among some of the car rental specialists in Florida that allows under 25 drivers with proper car insurance coverage to rent their vehicles.

You should also look into your credit card policy. Most credit card holders are entitled to have some degree of auto insurance that comes with using their credit card for car rentals and this may be enough to get your car rental agreement. There’s also some car rental company that will allow you to rent a car without personal car insurance as long as you agree to purchase the necessary coverages with them. Rates could go from 9$ to 20$ a day with this.

Vehicle Insurance Policy Framingham Massachusetts MA

Reader’s Question:

I heard from my aunt that there are mandatory and optional car insurance policies in Massachusetts. What is a mandatory auto insurance policy? And what is the optional car insurance coverage? I am from Framingham, Massachusetts.

Bettina

Framingham, MA

Massachusetts is a no-fault state. This means that if a person is involved in a car accident, regardless of whose fault it is, that person’s auto insurance company will automatically cover the damages depending on the limits on the policy.

The Massachusetts State has a mandatory auto insurance polices as follows:

1. for bodily injury to the other party: $20,000 for every person; $40,000 for every accident;
2. for bodily injury caused by a party that is not insured: $20,000 for every person; $40,000 for every accident;
3. for Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage that has a minimum required limit of $8,000; and
4. for damage to property with a required limit of $5,000

Those above mentioned polices are mandatory. According to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance the optional policies would include: increased limits both for bodily injury to the other party and bodily injured caused by an uninsured party; medical expenses coverage; collision policy; comprehensive coverage; substitute car’s coverage if your main vehicle is being repaired; and coverage for labor and towing in an event that your car broke down.

For more questions and information about auto insurance law in Framingham, Massachusetts you can ask the MA Department of Insurance or even your car insurance agent.

Driving Without Insurance Brockton Massachusetts MA

Reader’s Question:

I live in Brockton, Massachusetts. Last week, my roommate got involved in a bender fender. He does not have auto insurance so he just paid for the damage and both parties agreed not report it to the police. If this happens again and this time a law enforcement officer was called to the scene, would there be a punishment even if it’s a bender fender?

Chelsea

Brockton, MA

Yes, there would be a punishment.

Regardless if you are involved in a bender fender or in a serious vehicular accident that doesn’t change the fact that you are driving without car insurance, which you are not supposed to do in the first place.

Let me just tell you, it is required by the law that all cars operated in Massachusetts be insured. If you drive around without auto insurance and you were caught by a police officer then you’re up to bigger problems. Not only will you be asked to pay for $500 fine you could also go to jail for not more than 12 months plus your driver’s license can also be suspended.

Tell your roommate to get auto insurance ASAP. I would recommend using this website to get the different car insurance rates in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Auto Insurance Rate Greater Newark Delaware DE

Reader’s Question:

My cousin told me that that driving records, claim history or even credit history affects the rate of car insurance. He also told me that any negative change on those things would surely make my auto insurance premium to go up. That’s the reason why I’m keeping my best to maintain good driving record and credit history. Aside from the things I’ve mentioned are there other things that affect the auto insurance rate to go up in Greater Newark, Delaware?

Owen

Greater Newark, DE

Well your cousin s right. The things you’ve mentioned do affect car insurance rates. I learned from my dad that adding another driver under your auto insurance policy will also increase your car insurance premium. This is because the more drivers you have under your policy, the higher the risk is to be involved in car accidents.

Also, if you change the vehicle being insured to something fancy or expensive that will also increase your car insurance rate. When my dad bought me an expensive car, the increase on his auto insurance rate is something I did not imagine.

And lastly, I remember, when I had my new expensive car, my dad added GAP insurance policy for that new car. By doing that, his auto insurance rate even becomes higher. So I guess it’s obvious that adding another insurance coverage would mean a change on your car insurance premium.

Those are just some factors I remember that caused an increase on my dad’s car insurance rate. You could always ask your car insurance agent in Greater Newark, Delaware for other factors that will cause an increased on your car insurance rate.
